Horse Powered Reading®

Horse Powered Reading®  (HPR) is a type of Equine Assisted Learning built upon the EAGALA model. Since 2012 this approach has helped struggling readers who benefit from active, experiential instruction. HPR helps in all academic areas as it builds core learning skills.

The horses set the stage for exponential learning growth as critical learning skills are addressed following a research-based curriculum that is tailored to your student's specific learning goals and challenges.

What are Critical Learning Skills?

Critical Learning Skills can include:

English:

     -phonemic awareness and phonological processing

    -decoding and encoding

    -vocabulary

    -fluency

    -comprehension skills

  Writing: 

        -understanding, planning, managing tasks for different

          writing tasks

        -composition of ideas at sentence level, paragraph level,

          essay

       -research skills

​

Math:

     -number sense 

       -fluency of core operations (addition, subtraction,

          multiplication and division)

       -algebraic thinking

       -measurement and data

         -geometry

​

Core Thinking Skills:

        -attention strategies for managing ADHD

          -emotional, learning strategies for managing academic

             anxieties

          -focus and planning strategies for Executive

           Functioning

Why?

Often our children face difficulties with developing a love for reading and learning. Numerous studies support that reading with animals can break down negative feelings, such as anxiety.

The group facilitator is a literacy and learning specialist as well as an avid horse person. With over 17 years working in various fields within Special Education, your students learning is in good hands. Robin has a M.S. in Special Education, where she specialized in language based learning disabilities. She focused on comprehension and learning while attaining her CAGS-Reading from MGH-IHP. She has taught at Landmark School, Amesbury Public School, remotely for Chinese students, and currently as a literacy and learning specialist for students in California. Having working with students ages 2 through 75, Robin believes that every student has power over their learning and can do anything they set their minds to with the right tools and environment.
